Many Grateful Dead fan has had keyboardist Brent Mydland on their mind this week, as the late musician passed away on July 26th of 1990. Mydland was a defining aspect of the Dead’s sound during the 1980’s, adding both his songwriting and unique vocal range to the Dead’s iconic sound.
With Mydland on everyone’s mind, it was keyboardist Robert Walter that had the unique privilege of honoring his legacy. Walter was performing at Terrapin Crossroads with The Greyboy Allstars on July 27th and 28th, hitting the beloved venue founded by Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. Seeing Walter use the actual Hammond B3 played by Brent Mydland, at Lesh’s venue, must have been quite the emotional moment.
Considering Walter plays in the Greyboy Allstars, Mike Gordon’s solo band, and his many projects in New Orleans, we can only assume he was more than up to the task. The Greyboy Allstars hit Guitarfish Festival this weekend; don’t miss out!
