The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have named eight nominees for the upcoming induction class of 2015. The list includes: Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Green Day, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Lou Reed, Ringo Starr, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, Bill Withers, and the “5” Royales.
The inductees were chosen by a committee of over 700 members, including musicians, music journalists, historians, and music industry representatives. The eight choices came from a pool of 19, which included artists like Nine Inch Nails, Sting, and NWA.
The 2015 class is certainly comprised of worthy hall of famers, as each has contributed indelibly to the face of music (yes, even Green Day). Two of the inductees have previous inductions – Ringo Starr, with The Beatles, and Lou Reed, with Velvet Underground. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band were an incredibly influential group in the blues revival of the early 60s, a movement that spawned bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones.
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts are quintessential classic rock, well known for their hit single “I Love Rock n Roll.” Meanwhile, Bill Withers is a legend of soul music, with hits like “Lean On Me” and “Use Me.” Withers, 76, hasn’t released new music since 1985, though is reportedly considering a performance at the HOF induction ceremony. The “5” Royals were also influential in soul music, helping to define the R&B genre from 1945 to 1965.
Perhaps the most cathartic inductee on the list is Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, the coveted Texas blues band with arguably one of the best guitarists of all time. SRV was a phenomenally talented musician, and had been snubbed by the HOF committee for several years. His inclusion is particularly gratifying for his fans, who revere the late guitarist and singer.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on April 18, 2015.
