[Update 4/22/25]: After months of voting by music-lovers around the world, Phish has won the fan vote for the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction class, beating out 13 fellow nominees including (in order of vote totals) Bad Company, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Cocker, Soundgarden, Chubby Checker, The Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, Joy Division + New Order, The White Stripes, OutKast, Oasis, and Maná.
The voting page on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame website now reads, “The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Fan Vote has ended! Join our official e-newsletter and be amongst the first to know who will be in this year’s inductee class!” The page does not list the official final vote tally, though Phish had been leading runner-up Bad Company by roughly 50,000 votes throughout the last week of voting, which closed on Monday.
While the foundational jam band featuring Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon, and Page McConnell topped the fan vote, Phish is still not a shoo-in for induction this year. The largely ceremonial Rock & Roll Hall of Fame fan vote is meant to galvanize inductees’ fanbases and influence the actual voters, a panel of more than 1,200 artists, historians, music industry players, and other stand-ins for the rock and roll establishment—the very establishment Phish famously circumvented with its unorthodox route to rock stardom. At least a few have already been vocal about their distaste for the Vermont quartet (“A big fat no,” one anonymous voter said about Phish in a Vulture article last month).
Mike Gordon recently reflected on the Phish Rock Hall nomination in an interview with Live For Live Music. “It’s nice, what can I say?” he relented at one point, his sincere excitement about the honor shining through his patented stoicism. “We’ve done so much on our own path and that’s been incredible and I would not change a bit of that. But then to be kind of recognized in some of these ways by the more… what’s the word? By society [laughs]. There’s something nice about that.”
Although winning the fan vote has often been followed by official induction, there are notable outliers: Back in 2020, Dave Matthews Band racked up more than one million votes on the fan ballot only to lose out on induction that year. The group was later nominated again last year, won the fan vote for a second time, and was officially inducted during an October 2024 ceremony. As Vulture notes, “There’s even been a precedent for the Fan Vote “loser” getting in: That would be Jay-Z in 2021.”
The official list of 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees is due to be announced during American Idol this Sunday, April 27th at 8:00 p.m. on ABC (or streaming on Hulu the following day). View the approximate final tally below, via Consequence.
Phish is currently on tour as part of a brief spring jaunt on the West Coast. The band is set to perform at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 22nd and 23rd, ahead of a three-night run at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl this weekend. Find tickets to upcoming Phish shows here. Tune in to any and all of the shows from home with official livestreams via LivePhish here.

[2/12/25]: The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has revealed its nominees for induction in 2025 including Phish (!!!), OutKast, The Black Crowes, The White Stripes, Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Oasis, Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Maná, Oasis, and Soundgarden.
Per Billboard, “More than half of the nominees (eight, to be exact) are first timers on the ballot: Bad Company, the Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Maná, OutKast and Phish. This is not the first year of eligibility for any of those artists, however, as an artist becomes eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording.”
From here, the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees will be voted on by an international panel of more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry players. Fans will also have a chance to vote on their choices, with the fan vote influencing the final tally. The final Class of 2025 will be revealed in April, while the induction ceremony is set to take place in Los Angeles in the fall.
Fans can cast a vote for their choices here. Note: You are allowed to vote for up to seven of the nominees once per day through April 21st, so if there’s one band on that list that you really want to come out on top—maybe a band featuring a drummer wearing a muumuu—set yourself a daily alarm and get those votes in. Speaking of Phish, while the foundational jam band comprised of Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Jon Fishman, and Page McConnell has been eligible for more than a decade without a nomination, the flying hot dog prop the group rode across Boston Garden on New Year’s Eve 1994 has hung in the atrium of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH since the turn of the century. Anastasio also inducted Genesis into the Rock Hall at the institution’s 2010 ceremony.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction class included Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest.
