The first annual Desert Trip, socially dubbed Oldchella, kicked things off last night with an all-star lineup of classic rock legends. The Southern California music festival opened with headlining performances from The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Just a few days after announcing that the band is coming out with a blues album featuring Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts delivered a stand-out set of Stones classics.
A truly exceptional moment took place when the British rock band debuted “Come Together” by “a beat group you might remember.” Paul McCartney was watching on from a private VIP box and reportedly “pumping his fist in the air” with approval. It’s truly a dream come true for any baby boomer when The Rolling Stones cover The Beatles.
The nature of the festival brought on some ageist jokes, to which 73-year-old Mick Jagger addressed in saying, “We’re not going to hear any age jokes, are we?”. He laughed, “Welcome to the Palm Springs Retirement Home for Genteel Musicians!”
Tonight will see Neil Young and Paul McCartney, with Roger Waters and The Who closing out Sunday night. It’s the lineup of all lineups, as founding fathers of Rock & Roll unite for the first of two weekends. More information on the festival’s website.
