The Rolling Stones have announced a new album, Hackney Diamonds, featuring the band’s first new, original music in 18 years. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood discussed the album with Jimmy Fallon Wednesday morning during a livestreamed YouTube event that included a Q+A in front of a live audience and the premiere of the video for the album’s first single, “Angry”.

In addition to announcing a release date of October 20th, the senior rockers told Fallon that of the album’s 12 tracks, two were recorded in 2019 with late drummer Charlie Watts while the other ten feature Steve Jordan, who Keith Richards said was hand-picked by Charlie as his own successor. The album also features founding bassist Bill Wyman, who left the group after 30 years in 1993. The band did not comment on previous reports that the album would feature The Beatles members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

Asked about the album’s title, Jagger explained that the first options were “Hit and Run” and “Smash and Grab“, but the group settled on “Hackney Diamonds” in honor of the band’s hometown of London. “It’s like when you get windscreen broken on Saturday night in hackney … and all the bits go on the street,” Jagger explained, describing the slang term’s origin.

Later in the Q+A, Fallon reminded Richards of the time he was a guest on The Tonight Show and set off smoke alarms backstage with his cigarette smoking, which was very much prohibited in the studio. When the fire marshall arrived and told Richards to stop smoking, he replied, “I know it’s bad for my health.” The 79-year-old musician said he no longer smokes cigarettes: “Right after that I gave it up,” he told Fallon.

At the end of the livestream event, Fallon introduced actress Sydney Sweeney, who stars in the video for the first single from Hackney Diamonds, “Angry”.
