RÜFÜS DU SOL has obliged fans by officially releasing official audio of the group’s cover of the Nirvana classic, “Something In The Way”. Originally performed live for the triple j Like A Version series, the cover is out now across streaming platforms.
First released by the Australian media company back in December, the take on the Nevermind classic sees the electronic ensemble of Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George, and James Hunt expand their lineup. For the first time ever, RÜFÜS DU SOL brought in session musicians with the addition of a string quartet, mirroring the original track from Nirvana’s generation-defining 1991 album.
“That’s something we haven’t done yet,” the group shared in an interview with triple j. “In the studio we’ve often used like a mellotron or strings plug-ins, but we’ve never worked with an actual quartet… hearing live strings was such a cool experience for us because we’re used to working with soft synths and trying to make soft synths sound real. There’s just nothing really compared to having a live instrument.”
The resulting product taps into Kurt Cobain‘s haunting delivery as Lindqvist sits at the grand piano for the intro. As the tension builds, the rest of the band and accompanying string section join in to make the song eerily danceable in a combination as irresistible as it is unnecessary. The exact thing you didn’t know you needed and still aren’t quite sure you do.
Following a run of dates in South America and Mexico, including the group’s curated Sundream Festival in San José (5/4–5/7), RÜFÜS DU SOL will embark on a limited run of North American headlining concerts. The tour begins with two nights in Boston (8/1–8/2) and will visit Montreal, Toronto, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Charlotte.
