Say She She combines an infectious dance groove with a powerful message on new single “Disco Life”, the latest preview of the trio’s forthcoming album, Cut & Rewind, due out October 3rd via drink sum wtr.

Despite its upbeat feel, which channels the disco craze of the late 1970s with a modern touch, “Disco Life” is based on the disturbing story of the infamous “Disco Demolition Night,” a notorious promotion held on July 12th, 1979, at Chicago’s Comiskey Park during a White Sox doubleheader. Organized by radio DJ Steve Dahl, it invited fans to bring disco records to be blown up on the field between games. The stunt drew more than 50,000 people—far exceeding expectations—and spiraled out of control. After the explosion, thousands of attendees stormed the field, causing chaos and forcing the White Sox to forfeit the second game. The event became a cultural flashpoint, symbolizing the backlash against disco but also drawing criticism for its undertones of racism and homophobia, since disco was closely tied to Black, Latino, and LGBTQ communities.

“We wanted to reclaim that space and make it a playing field where all are free,” Say She She explained. “So we turned it into a discodelic dancefloor with our words, and every four on the floor drum beat is hopefully a stitch sewn.”

This politically charged dance anthem reflects the defiant spirit of Cut & Rewind, an album that underscores Say She She’s commitment to using music as a force for protest and social progress. It follows previous singles “Under the Sun”, a celebration of collective action inspired by the 2023 Hollywood Writers’ Strike, and “Cut & Rewind”, the record’s title track.
