The Magic Beans frontman Scott Hachey recently released his debut solo EP, Ataraxy, under the moniker Hachey.

Ataraxy, which means a state of freedom from emotional disturbance and anxiety, pays tribute to the state in which it was made. It blends tones of modern disco, low-fi hip hop, and upbeat funk, creating a unique musical experience. Whether it’s the four-on-the-floor house beat from “You Can Count (On Me)”, the reverberating bass tones on “Colossus of Clout”—(hopefully) an ode to the classic ’90s children’s movie The Sandlot—or the funk-inspired horns and organ on “Appreciate Ya”, the EP has something for even the pickiest of listeners.

It’s an amalgamation of live instruments, drum programming, software, hardware, and samples. While Hachey made most of Ataraxy from scratch, it also includes samples from artists like J Dilla, Aron Magner, Manny Fresh, The Dip, Brasstracks, Scott Storch, and others.

National online radio shows, as well as Colorado public radio, featured the single “I Don’t Care” upon its release last summer. Echoing vocals and a killer bassline groove on the disco track set the tone for the EP. It is available now on all streaming services.
