An all-star band comprised of John Medeski and Billy Martin of Medeski Martin & Wood, Wilco’s Nels Cline, JRAD/LaMP guitarist Scott Metzger, and special guests Sean Lennon and Yuka Honda gathered at the recently revived Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY on Thursday for a special benefit concert supporting Star Route Farm.

The performance featured highly experimental, mostly improvised music that defied genre classification. From gentle atmospheric jams and sound effects to aggressive funk grooves and avant-garde jazz, the benefit was—as Lennon put it—”a sublime and beautiful evening of music.”

The lineup shifted through various permutations as the night unfolded. After roughly 40 minutes of spellbinding improvisation, the core quartet pared down to a duo as Medeski and Martin ceded the stage to Cline and Metzger for an acoustic guitar duet. Martin then picked up his pandero and launched into a percussion solo that flowed seamlessly into a far-out Medeski-Martin jam. After a bit more quartet experimentation, Sean Lennon and Yuka Honda joined in to close the show with a thunderous cover of Black Sabbath‘s “Into the Void”, which was as riveting as it was unexpected.

Beyond raising crucial funds for Star Route Farm—which lost $850,000 in federal funding this year—the benefit celebrated ten years of nourishing communities across the Catskills, Hudson Valley, and New York City. It was a transcendent, adventurous, and unforgettable evening for those lucky enough to be there. For anyone who missed out, the quartet will reunite for a pair of Phish after-parties at Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge on December 29th and 30th.
