It is well-known that Grateful Dead leader and guitarist Jerry Garcia was a bluegrass aficionado before forming what went on to become arguably the most important band in American history. Prior to becoming the music icon, Garcia cut his teeth with a group called the Hart Valley Drifters.
The band consisted of good friend Robert Hunter, who penned many lyrics for the Grateful Dead, Ken Frankel, and David Nelson, who would later form the New Riders of the Purple Sage. According to the Wall Street Journal, the bluegrass trio would record a session at Stanford University for the radio show “Folk Time.” The full recording, which was originally taped in 1962, was rediscovered in 2008, and will receive a proper release.
The album, aptly titled Folk Time, will feature tracks such as “Cripple Creek,” “Nine Pound Hammer,” “Pig In A Pen,” and “Sitting On Top Of The World,” which released last week. The Stanley Brothers song “Think Of What You’ve Done,” came out today, and can be heard below. The full album is due out November 11 on Round Records/ATO.
