Semisonic, the alt-rock trio that emerged out of the Minneapolis music scene in 1995 and rose to fame with their timeless 1998 hit “Closing Time”, have returned with their first studio project in 19 years with You’re Not Alone, out today via Pleasuresonic Recordings.Â
All five songs heard on the new EP were penned by singer/guitarist Dan Wilson and feature playing from original members John Munson (bass) and Jacob Slichter (drums). The album is the band’s first release since 2001’s All About Chemistry, after which they professionally broke up but remained friends. Semisonic officially reunited 16 years later for a series in shows in Minneapolis in June 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Great Divide, and they’ve since made select performances in the years since. Wilson has also spent the last decade writing songs for popular artists include Adele and The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks).
“We were definitely all really psyched about making more music. We have a bunch of other songs that are partly or completely done,” Wilson said of the return of his band in a recent interview. “It’s going to depend on me writing a couple of new things, or a flow of new things for the band. But I feel confident about that, I want to do this as much as we can. Life is so demonstrably unpredictable. Here we are not being able to tour, canceling all of our shows, the future is so uncertain, but it makes me want to make Semisonic music.”
