Amid the Phish breakup, Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon came together for a one-off (well, two-off, technically) performance as part of Warren Haynes‘ annual Christmas Jam benefit concert in Asheville, NC. Alongside Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, they dubbed themselves SerialPod and made their unofficial debut at the invite-only Christmas Pre-Jam at Asheville’s The Orange Peel on December 16th. Then the following night, SerialPod took the stage at the Asheville Civic Center for the official Christmas Jam festivities, which remains the group’s last show to date.
The trio worked through Phish and Grateful Dead originals, as well as some classic covers of “Angel” by Jimi Hendrix and “Sweet Thing” by Van Morrison. New Orleans keys master Ivan Neville joined in for the latter part of the jams, closing the set with a “Waves”, “Angel”, and “Loose Lucy” extended jam. The eight-song set lasted nearly an hour and a half with no breaks and ultimately proved to be a one-off (or two-off, counting the pre-party) project.
