Sierra Ferrell has released a new single, “Fox Hunt”, from her forthcoming, unannounced follow-up to her debut album, 2021’s Long Time Coming.

Evoking visions of a rustic mountain life and dealing with themes of survival, “Fox Hunt” harkens back to Ferrell’s time as a nomadic performer busking on the streets of New Orleans and Seattle, as well as her Appalachian roots. The song centers around Ferrell’s enchanting vocals, with folky fiddle, banjo, and a boot-stomping rhythm, and it arrived along with a video combining Ferrell’s far-out, free-spirited ethos with illustrations in the style of familiar children’s books.

“’Fox Hunt’ is my ode to hunters,” Ferrell said. “We live in a world where most all of us get everything from a supermarket and we take that food security, or at least the convenience, for granted. It wasn’t that long ago where that wasn’t the case… where hunting and gathering was how regular folks provided for their family, and leaving the hunt empty handed wasn’t much of an option.”

The new single and album announcement come at the end of a milestone year for Sierra Ferrell. In addition to selling out every one of her headlining shows, the fast-rising folk star made her mark on major festivals including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk, and Stagecoach, and she recently collaborated with Zach Bryan, Diplo, and Margo Price, appeared on records by The Black Keys, Ray LaMontagne, and Shakey Graves, shared stages with Lana Del Rey, The Avett Brothers, and Nathaniel Rateliff, and has been covered by Kelly Clarkson.

Ferrell’s upcoming tour dates include a run of arenas and stadiums with Zach Bryan, with additional shows to be announced soon. Click below for a list of tour dates, and for more information and to purchase tickets, visit her website.

Lyrics:

Oooo, oooo
Oooo, oooo

Well, take the path down to the river, it is hunting time
Clothe the kids and feed the children, oh the meat is fine
Don’t let them dogs out of your sight, don’t let them slip through your hands
Just chase that fox down through the pine through the cold river bend

Oooo, oooo
Oooo, oooo

Well, take the path down to the river, it is hunting time
To clothe the kids and feed the children, oh the meat is fine
Don’t let them dogs out of your sight, don’t let them slip through your hands
Just chase that fox down through the pine through the cold river bend

Oooo, oooo
Oooo, oooo

I’m just a hunter
Just trying to survive

With a gun in hand and my man we go into the woods
I know just what I need to do and yes it’s understood
Rumbling belly, shaking limbs, we’re gonna try and make a stand
No we’re not going anywhere without a prize from the land

Oooo, Oooo
Oooo, Oooo

I’m just a hunter (Oooo, oooo)
Just trying to survive (Oooo, ooo)

Oooo, Oooo
Oooo, Oooo

I’m just a hunter
Just trying to survive
