Snoop Dogg Retires From Hip-Hop To Pursue Career As Reggae Artist

According to Snoop Dogg, he is retiring from the rap game to pursue his new found career as a reggae artist. As last reported Snoop Dogg had traveled to Jamaica and recorded an album with Diplo under the alias Snoop Lion, entitled Reincarnated. The making of the album is poised to become a documentary that will be seen for the first time by the public at Toronto’s film festival. It seems probable Snoop chose to work with the EDM sensation because of his own Jamaican influence which caused him to create his side project with Switch called Major Lazer.

The “ex-rapper” states the move to become a reggae artist is not a personal decision but a spiritual one. He claims, “the spirit called me … And, you know, anytime the spirit calls you, you gotta know that its serious.” He is not looking to be featured as, “Snoop on a reggae track”, but instead just “want[s] to bury Snoop Dogg and become Snoop Lion”, after seeking guidance from a high priest in Jamaica.

According to the artist formally known as Snoop D-O- Double G, “Rap is not a challenge to me. I had enough of that. It’s not appealing to me no more. I don’t have no challenges … I’m ‘Uncle Snoop’ in rap. When you get to be an uncle, you need to find a new profession so you can start over and be fresh again.” Snoop continued, “I’ve always wanted to perform for kids, my grand mother and people around the world that love me, can’t accept the music that I make. This reggae music is the music of love, happiness and struggle.”

Has Snoop really chosen to shed the OG persona we’ve all come to love for good and embark on a spiritual journey through the voice of Snoop Lion? Doubtful. While Reincarnated producer Diplo creates music and tours under Major Lazer, he has not abandoned his work under his original name, and continues to tour under both personas. Also, a little after the rapper was “called upon by the spirit to come to Jamaica” and had a spiritual awakening, he played his album “Doggystyle” in its entirety at Capalta Music Festival. Nice Try Snoop. Another rational could be this being staged as promotion for the upcoming documentary. While the “reggae gangster bit” is going to be a fun/profitable change up, we guarantee it’s not the last time you hear him play “Gin and Juice”.
