The news of David Bowie’s departure has struck a chord within the music community. With tributes flowing throughout the world, the British pop rock icon is being remembered in some of the best ways possible. One fan even changed the Bowie Street sign at the corner of 5th Street in Austin, Texas to read “David Bowie Street”. Now that’s commemoration!

While technically illegal in that this is both an act of vandalism and theft, the city of Austin is actually okay with this new change. They’re even going to leave it up for a full week as a memorial to The Man Who Fell To Earth. Read ATD’s full statement below:

“The Austin Transportation Department has been notified that someone got creative with the street sign at Bowie and 5th Streets, changing the sign to read ‘David Bowie’ in memory of the musician and pop-culture icon. We appreciate Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World and recognize David Bowie for all he did for the music industry and more. To this end, we will leave the sign up until Tuesday, January 19th, so our community can enjoy the makeshift memorial a few days longer. At that time we will have to replace it with the real street name sign.”

Rock on, Austin!
