In the last 25 years of the ever-expanding alt-country scene, few bands have been as influential as Son Volt. Even after a quarter-century, however, the group continues to innovate the genre they helped build, as evidenced with their latest studio output, “Reverie”. The song is set to appear on the band’s 10th studio album, Electro Melodier, out on July 30th via Transmit Sound/Thirty Tigers.

With the lead single, “Reverie”, Son Volt continues to build upon the bedrock of the alt-country movement while also updating the sound for the modern era. The lyrics of “Reverie” encompass the reflective nature of bandleader and principal lyricist Jay Farrar, who left the seminal alt-country band Uncle Tupelo in 1994, while the music meanwhile continues the blend of country-rock edge that made Son Volt the tastemakers for a movement.

The title of the band’s forthcoming album, Electro Melodier, comes from the names of two vintage amplifiers of the late 40s and early 50s. Simultaneously, that allusion to a bygone era of music also stands as a metaphor for the album’s unique blend of folk, rock, blues, country, and more.

“I wanted to concentrate on the melodies which got me into music in the first place,” says Farrar. “I wanted politics to take a back seat this time, but it always seems to find a way back in there.”
