Spafford on Saturday reached into its grab-bag of songs to pull out “Slip & Squander” for the first time since New Year’s Eve 2022. The bust-out highlighted the band’s third of four sold-out shows at Public House in Crested Butte, CO as part of the Spaffski Tour.

Bassist Jordan Fairless helmed the tender ballad from Spafford’s sophomore studio album, 2018’s For Amusement Only. Fairless’ serene singing voice is a secret weapon for the band that has plenty of them, with his opening lyrical lullaby hushing a crowd forced to contain their excitement for the bust-out. From the delicate opening, guitarist Brian Moss and drummer Nick Tkachyk locked in together to build the song into a glorious Chariots of Fire-esque jam to close out the show’s first set.

“Slip and Squander” had not been seen since Spafford’s 2022 New Year’s Eve concert in Tempe, AZ, the band’s last with founding keyboardist Andrew “Red” Johnson. Following the NYE show, Red stepped away from Spafford to focus on his family, replaced behind the keys by Cory Schechtman. With Red’s departure, so too went his many cherished originals. Brian Moss has since stepped up to the plate to take over the lion’s share of the vocals, hence why it’s somewhat surprising that it took over a year for “Slip and Squander” to reappear.
