Less than a week after David Letterman announced his retirement from “The Late Show,” CBS announced via press release that Stephen Colbert would be his replacement. The press release elaborated, saying that Colbert would retire his Colbert Report persona, and “be himself as the host of the CBS show.”

Both Letterman and Colbert are avid musical supporters, with each introducing numerous musical guests throughout their television careers. Recently, Letterman hosted a weeklong tribute to The Beatles, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the band performing on the Ed Sullivan Show. Check out some videos from that week, including performances from Ms. Lauryn Hill and The Flaming Lips. Check those out below:

Colbert has also been an avid supporter of musicians. The ‘Report’ host founded Stephest Colbchella, which almost booked Daft Punk, and regularly features musical guests, including the likes of Paul McCartney, Jack White, and so many more.

Here’s an excellent example of Colbert’s love of music, with his appearance in Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” on his show. Get ready for Colbert around 1:45.

Yeah, that was awesome.

No specifics about ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ have been released, but it’s safe to assume that Colbert will continue his legacy, and the legacy of ‘The Late Show,’ by supporting musical guests. Colbert will make an excellent host, and I for one am looking forward to it.
