Though Steve Earle proclaimed on his 2011 album I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, the 67-year-old outlaw country torchbearer has fared far better than many of his friends and influences. The singer-songwriters that schooled Earle when he first arrived in Austin, TX in the 1970s are gone now, such as Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clarke. Their memories are far from forgotten, however, as their songs have rang through Earle’s tribute records with his backing band The Dukes including 2009’s Townes and 2019’s Guy.

In 2020, country lost another songwriting pillar in Jerry Jeff Walker. Steve Earle will pay tribute to the fallen cowboy troubadour dubbed “Mr. Bojangles” with a tribute album, Jerry Jeff. Set for digital release on May 27th via New West Records—with CD and vinyl arriving on August 26th—the album announcement arrives alongside the lead single “Gettin’ By”.

“This record completes the set, the work of my first-hand teachers,” Earle explains in the liner notes, referencing Townes and Guy. “The records were recorded and released in the order in which they left this world. But make no mistake—it was Jerry Jeff Walker who came first.”

Steve Earle & The Dukes give their rockabilly, honky-tonk flair to “Gettin’ By”, lifted from Jerry Jeff’s 1973 album Viva Terlingua! Earle shamelessly admits his adoration for the late songwriter in the track’s opening, “Hi buckaroos / Steve Earle again / Trying to be Jerry Jeff once more.”
