Earlier this year, jamtronica mainstays STS9 surprised fans with the very first installment of their Wave Spell series. Released via their Bandcamp subscription service, the compilation featured a full album’s worth of brand-new improvised music that was recorded on a single day at the group’s own 1320 Studios in Santa Cruz, CA. At the time, STS9 promised there would be more to come. Yesterday, they delivered on that promise.
Wave Spell: Day Out of Time 2017 is the latest installment in the band’s improvisational music series. The effort, which is only available to fans who have subscribed to STS9’s Bandcamp service, features four songs that vary in length from a little over two minutes to almost fourteen minutes. As the band notes in its description:
Waves come in many shapes and forms – the same goes for these Wave Spells. These four songs were recorded in one session, on a day out of time last year. It flows through a range of different tempos and dimensions. We hope you enjoy 🙏 thank you for continuing this experiment with us!!
Fans of STS9 waited five years between 2011’s When The Dust Settles EP and 2016’s The Universe Inside, so the outpouring of new recorded music in the last year has been a welcome development for many of them. If recent interviews are any indication, we can expect even more releases of this nature going forward.
STS9 will return to the road next month when they headline the Backwoods Music Festival in Ozark, AR from April 20th to 22nd. The five-piece will then head back west for a three-night run at the Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas. The band also has a few summer festival dates on the horizon, including stops at Summer Camp, Bonnaroo, and Camp Bisco. You can check out a full list of their upcoming tour dates via their website.
