Sturgill Simpson has released a new music video for his song “A Good Look” from his 2019 Sound & Fury album. The video is culled from footage of his anime-style Netflix film that accompanied the album, also named Sound & Fury.

The video is merely a snippet of the full Jumpei Mizusaki-directed short film, and just like the film, the video for “A Good Look” is drenched in cartoon violence and nudity. “A Good Look” picks up right at the climactic moment when the hero comes to do battle with the film’s villains who appear to embody gluttony and greed. After the protagonist slays her nemeses, however, she joins in with an army of topless, blindfolded soldiers in a choreographed dance number around the bleeding corpses.

“A Good Look” is a perfect snippet from Sound & Fury to show the juxtaposition that Sturgill employs throughout the album and film. Even when there are headless bodies lying on the ground and half-naked women by the hundreds, he makes the viewer forget all that by having them break out into a dance reminiscent of the Charleston. All the while, the lyrics for “A Good Look” decry the vitriolic nature of fame with lines like “well now, how you gonna eat when you’re biting the hand/well you know they don’t like it when you take a stand,” all the while, you’re still focused on the funny dancing.
