While Sturgill Simpson has stated categorically that his career as a solo musician is over, that hasn’t stopped him from following other creative pursuits. The next venture for the revolutionary country singer-songwriter is a role on the acclaimed HBO series The Righteous Gemstones, set to premiere its third season on June 18th.

In a trailer for the season, Sturgill Simpson is shown as a member of a Christian “militia” that comes into the twisted world of the Gemstones and their megachurch. Simpson joins returning cast members Danny McBrideJohn GoodmanAdam DevineCassidy FreemanWalton GogginsSkyler Gisondo, and others. The series was created, written, and directed by McBride, a personal friend of Simpson’s.

“I just respect his journey,” McBride told Pitchfork of Simpson in 2019. “I respect that he’s been doing what he’s doing and found success not when he was 19 years old. He kind of lived a whole life before he became a rock star. And he actively wants to shed people’s perceptions of him. He leads the charge in his career, and not in a way that people expect. I think that’s admirable. I feel like it’s the kind of thing we try to do with what we make as well, always trying to stay ahead of the audience and not trying to get boxed into a corner.”

This is far from Simpson’s first foray into acting. He also has an upcoming role in Martin Scorcese‘s highly anticipated film adaptation of David Grann‘s Killers Of The Flower Moon. In addition to A-listers like Leonard DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, the film, set for release on October 20th, also features fellow musicians Jason Isbell and Jack White.

Similarly, this is not The Righteous Gemstone‘s first casting call to the world of live music. The show’s second season also witnessed a cameo from Umphrey’s McGee bassist Ryan Stasik, a proud resident of Charleston, SC, where the show is based and filmed.

His most recent and allegedly final solo album, The Ballad of Dood & Juanita, arrived in 2021.
