An impressive lot of 62 artists have banded together to raise money for L.A. wildfire relief with a new compilation, Super Bloom. The wide-ranging digital release includes tracks by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Ty Segall, Hiss Golden Messenger, and many more.
Compiled by Nicky Devine, Nicole Lawrence (Jenny Lewis), and Nora McDonough in association with (((folkYEAH!))), Super Bloom features some tracks recorded in Altadena which was one of the areas hardest hit by the wildfires. All proceeds will benefit local mutual aid organizations for L.A. fire relief including Sweet Relief, Direct Relief, Mutual Aid L.A., Anti-Recidivism Coalition, and Pasadena Humane.
“A ‘super bloom’ refers to the stunning reveal of orange and red poppies, paper thin against the dark hillsides of our mountains after a long winter or particularly blackened earth,” Devine said in a statement. “Without the burn, the vibrancy wouldn’t be so superb. It acts as a reminder: we will grow from this, and so much more splendidly.”

Among the highlights from Super Bloom is an early demo of “Exploding Suns” which would later appear on KGLW’s lauded 2022 album Changes. Elsewhere, MMJ frontman Jim James offers a surprising cover of Ritchie Valens‘ “Donna” with Dave Givan on drums and Seth Kauffman on bass. Hiss Golden Messenger gives a live recording of “Glory Strums” from the band’s October 2024 show in Ridgefield, CT, Ty Segall shares an unreleased song “The Hallway”, Mac DeMarco adds “20240425 v2nm” somehow cut from his 199-track collection One Wayne G, Jenny Lewis and Cass McCombs team up for “Big Mother”, and many more.
