Tame Impala announced Deadbeat in July with the lead single, “End of Summer“. The sprawling, seven-minute track introduced Parker’s vision for the fifth Tame Impala studio album, one heavily inspired by Western Australia rave and bush doof (outdoor dance parties with electronic music held in the rainforest or surrounding bush) cultures.
The new album melds Tame Impala’s long-established psych-pop motif with acid house and club beats, accompanied by self-deprecating lyrics, creating a negative feedback loop as incessant as the monotonous rhythms. Whereas 2020’s chart-topping The Slow Rush took a heady view of time on a macro scale, Deadbeat zooms all the way in to the mundane, and often morose, inner machinations of the mind, pitching “raving as self-enquiry, self-medication in lieu of self-care. … Reality can wait another day (or two),” per a press release.
