Tedeschi Trucks Band tied a bow on its seven-night 2022 Beacon Theatre residency on Saturday evening with a powerful performance featuring the group’s first ever rendition of Harry Styles hit “Sign of the Times”.

This year’s TTBeacon run has been as eventful as any in recent memory. In addition to welcoming guests like Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady (Hot Tuna) and marking their milestone 50th show at the storied New York venue, Derek TrucksSusan Tedeschi, and company used the residency as a a platform to show off their latest project, the four-part I Am The Moon, with full-section readings on each of the first four nights.

At Saturday’s two-set finale finale, Tedeschi Trucks Band celebrated by taking a cover of Jon Prine‘s “Angel From Montgomery” into “Sign of the Times”, Harry Styles’s 2017 debut single. While the power ballad by the English pop superstar was an unexpected choice for the blues-soul-rock 12-piece, it felt like a perfect fit for the occasion as a sharp-dressed Susan crooned the lyrics, “Welcome to the final show, I hope you’re wearing your best clothes.”

The pairing of “Angel From Montgomery” and “Sign of the Times” continued a new trend from last year’s Tedecshi Trucks Beacon run. While TTB had historically performed “Angel” in tandem with the Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter‘s “Sugaree”, the band surprised fans on 10/1/21 by landing on Neil Young‘s “Helpless” instead. Here’s hoping the “Angel” sparring partner switch-up becomes another lasting tradition for TTB in NYC.

Other highlights of Tedeschi Trucks Band’s seventh and final night at the Beacon Theatre included a cover of Dr. John‘s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” with Wynton and Branford Marsalis associates Jeff “Tain” Watts (drums) and Ricky “Dirty Red” Gordon (percussion) sitting in, a poignant run through The Allman Brothers Band‘s “Stand Back”, an encore pairing of James Taylor‘s “Fire and Rain” and The Box Tops‘ “The Letter”, and an enveloping rendition of I Am The Moon opus “Pasaquan” that evoked Grateful Dead “Drums”/”Space” jams of old.
