On Friday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to Boston’s Orpheum Theatre to continue their final run of 2018.
The powerhouse 12-piece began their second of three Boston shows with “Part of Me”, followed by a cover of Delaney & Bonnie‘s “Comin’ Home”. Let Me Get By (2016) track “Right On Time” came next before the band moved into another go-to live cover, The Lovin’ Spoonful‘s “Darlin’ Be Home Soon”.
After taking a couple minutes to tinker with The Beatles‘ Sgt. Pepper classic “Within You Without You”, the band segued into “Just As Strange”. “I Pity The Fool”. Next, the band welcomed bassist Evan Sarver—a frequent collaborator with TTB saxophonist Kebbi Williams—to add some extra low-end flavor to excellent renditions of “I Pity The Fool” and “Made Up Mind”. Finally, after an extended “Drums” segment, an anthemic “Let Me Get By” brought set one to a close.
The evening’s second frame got underway with a tribute to the late Leon Russell in the form of “A Song For You” before Let Me Get By‘s “Anyhow” continued to build the set’s momentum. Next, Tedeschi Trucks Band thrilled their Boston audience with a searing rendition of Blind Willie McTell‘s “Statesboro Blues”, a song that’s remained in Derek Trucks‘ live repertoire throughout his career, from his time with the Allman Brothers Band through his current gig with TTB. From there, the band once again invited Evan Sarver to the stage to assist on a spirited reading of newer debut “High & Mighty” and yet another tried-and-true live cover, Derek and the Dominos‘ “Keep On Growing”. Next, the band moved into Derek Trucks Band favorite “Get What You Deserve”. Following an extended intro, the band dropped into “Bound For Glory” before navigating into Bob Dylan‘s “Down In The Flood” to cap the set.
Finally, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned for a two-song encore pairing of go-to summer 2018 cover “Show Me” (Joe Tex) and highly sought-after cover “Space Captain” (Joe Cocker).
Tedeschi Trucks Band will round out their Boston run—and their overall 2018 touring schedule—with a final performance at the Orpheum Theatre tonight, Saturday, December 1st. For a full list of already-announced 2019 Tedeschi Trucks Band shows, head to the band’s website.
