On Friday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band hit the road once again, kicking off their fall tour in Birmingham, Alabama, with a performance at the Alabama Theatre. Tedeschi Trucks Band’s traditional keys player, Kofi Burbridge, had a difficult summer this year—in June, the musician was forced to have an emergency heart surgery. Though the surgery was successful, in the months since, Burbridge has been on the mend, and the band tapped Carey Frank to fill in while Burbridge is recovering. With Frank filling in, Friday’s tour-opening show saw Tedeschi Trucks Band in proper form, putting on a soulful show for the Alabama crowd.

The band opened the show with two newer songs—”Laugh About It” and “Don’t Know What It Means”—off their latest studio album, Let Me Get By, which was released in early 2016. From there, with Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks at the helm, the twelve-person ensemble offered their traditional sampling of original tunes and choice covers. Highlights of the show included an outstanding rendition of “Midnight In Harlem,” which came toward the middle of the show’s main set, as well as a cover of Foghat’s “Chevrolet”, a relatively new song for the group which was debuted back in May of this year. For their encore, Tedeschi Trucks Band closed the show with their own “Bound For Glory,” giving Carey Frank the opportunity to flex and let loose behind the keys.
