Tenacious D, the self-proclaimed “GREATEST BAND ON EARTH,” has officially announced the upcoming release of Post-Apocalypto, an audiovisual “masterpiece” which includes a brand-new album and an animated web series to go along with it.
Tenacious D’s Post Apocalypto web series is set to hit YouTube on September 28th, with the album following shortly behind in on November 2nd. Along with the announcement, The D shared a bleak (though somehow still amusing) new teaser video for the web series, indicating that the new project will see Jack Black and Kyle Gass use their rock powers to navigate a post-apocalyptic dystopia of humanity’s own creation. In an interview with Kerrang! earlier this year, Black referenced the plans for a new Tenacious D project, saying “We’ve been working on it for years. It’s a post-apocalyptic musical comedy that’s an animated series that no one wanted in Hollywood but we’re making it anyway. And it’s very cheap, and it looks cheap, but that’s what makes it funnier.” He went on to liken the animation style (drawn by Jack himself) to those of Beavis & Butthead. “So that’s the plan, we’re making this album called Post-Apocalypto, and it’s all a story, like a rock opera like Tommy or The Wall….just like those.”
The band first officially hinted at the new release during their headlining slot at Shaky Knees Music Festival in May. Soon after, Kage and J-Bles released their first teaser video for Post Apocalypto as part of the announcement of their first tour in five years (“new album 2018…probably…new tour 2018…DEFINITELY”).
