[2/21/25]: The Capitol Theatre and the village of Port Chester, NY will celebrate the life and legacy of Phil Lesh by naming a street after him. The village will dedicate Phil Lesh Lane outside The Capitol Theatre on March 14th, coinciding with the start of Grahame Lesh & Friends‘ Unbroken Chain four-night run at The Cap and Phil’s 85th birthday.

Beginning next month, the corner of Westchester Avenue and Broad Street will be henceforth known as Phil Lesh Lane. That corner houses The Capitol Theatre’s stage door, or “Door 12,” the same entrance Lesh used for his 106 shows at the venue since 2012.

“The Lesh Family is so honored that the many magical nights that Phil spent at The Cap will be commemorated with Phil Lesh Lane. Phil loved The Cap and the entire community that came to his shows here, and our whole family will always feel the love that reflected back to him and all of us,” Grahame Lesh said. “It is extra special for this commemoration to happen on his 85th Birthday weekend, as we all spent so many of his birthdays with Deadheads who traveled from near and far to celebrate with him and our family.”

The street dedication will occur at 4 p.m., hours before Phil’s son Grahame begins the four-night Unbroken Chain run with a rotating cast of Friends from throughout his father’s life. March 14th and Phil’s birthday March 15th will feature a lineup of the Grateful Dead bassist’s contemporary Friends including Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), Eric KrasnoOteil Burbridge (Dead & Company), Jason CrosbyJohn Molo, and Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band). On Sunday, March 16th, Grahame will throw it back with 2000s-era Friends Jackie GreeneLarry CampbellSteve Molitz, Teresa Williams, and John Molo. Finally, the celebration will wrap on Monday, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day) with a reunion of the Phil Lesh Quintet a.k.a. “The Q” with Warren HaynesJimmy Herring (Widespread Panic), Rob Barraco (Dark Star Orchestra), and John Molo.

“Phil was like a father to the Capitol, and performed there more times than any other musician in the theater’s history,” Capitol Theatre owner Peter Shapiro said. “We are thrilled that he will now be with us, on the same street, for every show the theater has moving forward, forever.”

Port Chester previously celebrated Lesh’s impact on the community by giving him the key to the village in 2017 and making him an honorary firefighter in 2018, with his own custom Stealie-adorned fire helmet. Find ticket information and details for the Unbroken Chain shows here.
