Jamtronic forefather Jon “Barber” Gutwillig of The Disco Biscuits tipped his cap to the next generation earlier this month by sitting in with stylistic descendant Space Bacon. The collaboration occurred May 17th at the second-annual Dual Pathways festival on the Biscuits’ home turf in Philadelphia.
Space Bacon appeared midway through the loaded bill at Philly’s Underground Arts, sharing the bill with lespecial, Consider the Source, Dizgo, Blockhead, and others. After digging into the doom-meets-dance riff of new song “Clownslayer” (a great match for recently installed guitarist Fred Rylands‘ Sleep Dopesmoker shirt), Space Bacon brought out the jamdaddy of Philadelphia, Jon Barber. Though Babs is the star of his own show, the gracious guest smoothly slid into a two-guitar configuration and assisted structurally in building a jam that the band rode out for nearly 15 minutes. While the phrase “passing the torch” certainly gets overused in the jam band world, judging by last Saturday’s sit-in, Barber definitely saw a spark in the young, rising Space Bacon.
Space Bacon is gearing up for a big summer, starting with a show at Denver’s Meow Wolf on June 27th. The band also has a flurry of festival appearances at TroutStock Music Festival in Montague, MA (7/25–7/27), Re/Evolution: Summerjam in Darrington, WA (8/6–8/9), and Lotus’ SummerDance Festival outside Cleveland, OH (8/28–8/31).
