The Disco Biscuits landed on Long Island over the weekend for a two-night stay at The Paramount in Huntington, NY. For the trancefusion pioneers’ inaugural shows at the 1920s moviehouse-turned-concert venue, The Disco Biscuits looked skyward for a pair of concerts featuring nods to Star Wars and Led Zeppelin.
Following an opening set that saw The Biscuits dig deep on a half-hour inverted “Portal To An Empty Head”, they kicked off the second set with “Above the Waves”. Amid the 20-minute telling of the longtime live staple, keyboardist Aron Magner referenced Star Wars with teases of John Williams‘ “The Imperial March” on his phaser-like synths. Before the song was finished, The Disco Biscuits made another interstellar homage with a jam on the original “Stars in the Sky”. Though not space-themed, the 33-minute “Ring the Doorbell Twice” from the second set was yet another sterling endorsement for the emerging live favorite and worth a relisten on nugs.
Saturday’s show got off to a hot start with an adventurous 25-minute “Morph Dusseldorf” which ultimately sandwiched the entire first set with “Shadow”, “Pilin’ It High”, and “Country Royale” jammed in between. For the final set in Huntington, The Disco Biscuits teed off with a “Mindless Dribble” which would prove the longest entry in the song-heavy frame. After a brief “Helicopters”, the Biscuits decided they weren’t finished with “Country Royale” and brought it back for another satisfying 18 minutes. Within that jam, Magner once again put his synths to work as he threw in some teases of “Misty Mountain Hop” from the fourth untitled Led Zeppelin album. Running with the Led theme, Magner dropped samples of Robert Plant from Physical Graffiti‘s “Kashmir” in the “Dino Baby” that followed—and it went over far better than a Led Zeppelin.
