The Disco Biscuits were in Atlanta on Saturday night and, when in Rome, the band paid tribute to local luminaries OutKast, TLC, and Gucci Mane with samples throughout the show. The Saturday night rager at the Tabernacle was the penultimate show of the band’s 34-date, cross-country Why We Dance tour, the band’s most extensive outing in years.

After executing the Ash-Nash dash with shows in Asheville, NC and Nashville on Thursday and Friday, The Biscuits came into Atlanta with the “Eye of the Tiger” as they opened the show with their second-ever instrumental take on the Survivor hit. Bassist Marc Brownstein introduced the band at the start of the song, giving a special shoutout to “the hometown boy” Allen Aucoin on drums who grew up about 100 miles away in Columbus, GA. The Biscuits included some more local shoutouts in “Tiger”, dropping samples of ATL’s own TLC (“Waterfalls) and OutKast (“So Fresh, So Clean”) in the 16-minute opening shot. This would not be the last the audience heard of either seminal Atlanta hip-hop group that evening.

Following “Rock Candy”, the band hit the centerpiece of set one with a “Ring the Doorbell Twice” that stretched to 35 minutes. Along the way, keyboardist Aron Magner let loose another local sample with TiĂ«sto and Svenn‘s “BOOM” featuring Big Guwop himself, Gucci Mane. After the half-hour-plus trance, the Biscuits threw it back to last Thursday by finishing the “Little Betty Boop” that the band left incomplete at the House of Blues New Orleans. Already in the mood for wrapping up unfinished business, the band returned to finish off their “Rock Candy” to end the first set.

Considering their proximity to the Delta hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, it was appropriate that The Biscuits took off for set two via “Helicopters”. The chartered whirlybirds took the quartet into a “Mindless Dribble” that featured more input from the duo of AndrĂ© 3000 and Big Boi by way of OutKast’s 2003 smash hit “Hey Ya!”.

“Dribble” led into “Photograph” for a segment that ultimately amounted to a solid 45 minutes and also included a sample of Duran Duran‘s “Rio”. Though the ’80s hitmakers do not hail from The A, the snippet of the catchy number was right at home on the Disco Biscuits dancefloor. From there, the band’s incendiary performance fittingly flowed into “Fire Will Exchange” before they brought “Helicopters” back down for a landing. To finish off the show, The Disco Biscuits touched on their new album Revolution in Motion—the band’s first studio album in 13 years—with “Another Plan of Attack” where things came full circle with another “Waterfalls” sample to close the show.
