Classic rockers The Kinks will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2014… that is, if brothers Ray and Dave Davies decide to bury to hatchet and commemorate the milestone. The Kinks defied musical norms in 1964 with their proto-punk-pop sound, pushing boundaries and influencing bands like The Who and The Rolling Stones, not to mention just about any punk band that’s ever existed.
According to a story in Uncut Magazine, Ray Davies said that the band’s reunion is “as close as it’s ever been to happening.” Dave Davies elaborated, saying that the brothers reminisced for the first time since the band split in 1996. “I said to Ray I thought that it’d be a great shame if we don’t try and do something,” said Dave.
But, according to the interview, The Kinks won’t return for the wrong reasons. “I don’t want to see the legacy of the Kinks soured by two miserable old men doing it for the money,” said Dave Davies. Ray spoke to the same concerns, saying, “I’d like something good to come out of it, not something sad… I’d like to do something sensible, artistic and dignified. There’s every possibility it could happen, if people behave. Or misbehave at the appropriate moment.”
Davies brothers… if you’re out there… come back!! We’d all like to come dancing with the Kinks, even if it is fifty years later!
