The Main Squeeze has shared a live rendition of “Dr. Funk” featuring guest saxophonist Grace Kelly. Premiered on Wednesday evening, the performance was filmed from the group’s home in Los Angeles, CA.
With the sprawling hills of L.A. pictured through the windows of the band’s home, Grace Kelly opens this elongated version of “Dr. Funk” with some jazzy interplay between Ben “Smiley” Silverstein (keys) and Maximillian Newman (guitar). Originally appearing on the band’s 2012 self-titled album, this interpretation stretches far past the studio recording’s 3:48 runtime.
The flourishing intro eventually gives way to a thick bassline from Rob “Skywalker” Walker, signaling to frontman Corey Frye that it’s his time to shine. Dancing into the frame, Frye tells the soulful story of “Dr. Funk” with all the skillful and extravagant vocal work fans have come to know and love.
Around the three-minute mark, Frye takes himself out of the frame and allows Kelly to put her sax prowess on full display. She delivers some energetic lines before turning to Newman and trading licks. The song eventually builds to a soaring crescendo ahead of Frye’s return on the chorus, “Call me the doctor/ Dr. Funk/ ‘Cuz I got what you need.” Scroll down to watch The Main Squeeze perform “Dr. Funk” live from the band’s LA home.
Frye and company will embark on a lengthy spring 2022 tour beginning on March 4th in Los Angeles, CA.
