It’s really impossible to say “The Motet” without conjuring a smile. The Colorado funk outfit gets down wherever they go, cultivating a loyal following nationwide. Occasionally the group will conjure various themes for their concerts, including “Funk is Dead” – with funky takes on Grateful Dead tunes – and the recently developed “Mixtape ’75” concept. They’ll be bringing the Mixtape ’75 to The Howlin Wolf in New Orleans, LA, on May 3rd, for a Jazzfest afterparty extravaganza.

The band debuted the idea last year, on Halloween, donning disco attire for a night of electrofunk like no other. Pulling classic tunes from the iconic year in music history, The Motet dug up classics like “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin, “Low Rider” by WAR, “Fame” by David Bowie and so many more.

Show Review: The Motet Get Down On Halloween With Mixtape ’75

When we asked Motet frontman Jans Ingber about the concept, he was all too happy to divulge. “We picked 1975 partially because our sound is electro funk. So funk came around with James Brown, Sly Stone, Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix. This is all late 60s/ early 70s guitar oriented. Electro-funk brought in synthesizers. 1975 was some of the first years that that was really on the forefront of modern music where it was funk with synthesizers. So there’s so much great music from that era, all through 75-80. The golden age of electro funk.”

The Motet’s Mixtape ’75 isn’t the only highlight of the upcoming show at The Howlin Wolf, however, as the legendary Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters) will host his 17th annual “Zigaboo’s Funk Revue” to kick off the evening, featuring Renard Poche, Chris Severin, Kurt Brunus, Roderick Paulin and Tracy Griffen.

We’re certainly hoping that Zigaboo will join The Motet for their rendition of the Meters’ classic, “Fire on the Bayou,” which happened to have been released in 1975…

It all happens Sunday May 3rd at the Howlin Wolf. Tickets and more information about the event can be found here.
