The String Cheese Incident contemplates love and longing in the band’s latest single, “Ain’t I Been Good To You”. The track arrives as the fourth preview of the band’s upcoming studio album, Lend Me A Hand, out September 8th. Previously released tracks include “Eventually“, “One More Time“, and the title track.
A bouncy reggae groove masks the downtrodden and dejected lyrics from bassist Keith Mosley, who wrote and sings the tune. Built around the titular question, the song is an instant earworm as Mosley is left out in the cold, asking over and over again, “Ain’t I Been Good To You”?
“‘Ain’t I Been Good to You’ is a simple reggae styled tune,” Mosley said of the song. “I came up with the groove and melody and then tried to imagine what Bob Marley might write for lyrics. The song explores a popular theme of love, longing and acceptance, and is a tribute to Bob, one of my all time musical heroes. I hope you enjoy it!”
Lend Me A Hand marks The String Cheese Incident’s first full-length studio release since 2017’s Believe. Working with producer Brad Cook (Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweets, Bon Iver), the band checked the lengthy instrumental passages at the door and instead delivered a collection of distilled, reflective folk-ish songs. The roots simplicity of the album is yet another creative evolution for the jam giants, currently celebrating their 30th anniversary as a group.
“Every album’s a snapshot of the band at that moment, and this record turned out to be one of our most introspective,” Moseley explained of Lend Me A Hand. “We were coming out of the pandemic and coming up on our anniversary; we’d lost someone who’s been an important part of our team for so long. All those thoughts and feelings coalesced into something that’s much more focused on the storytelling, and feels more like hanging out in the living room with us while we sing you some songs.”
