Todd Snider invited a special guest over to his The First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder livestream on December 6th, Widespread Panic keyboardist John “JoJo” Hermann, who joined the folk troubadour for a cover of “Crazy Mama” by J.J. Cale, shared on Sunday.

Snider and Hermann are certainly no strangers, as the two musicians have crossed paths a number of times over the years. In fact, earlier this year ,Hermann hosted his own livestream series—Shut Up And Play—from Snider’s The Purple Building studio in East Nashville, where Snider records his own streaming series. Snider also joined Widespread Panic on stage last August at the Ryman Auditorium, his first time playing with the band since the summer of 1998.

While Widespread Panic’s affinity for Cale is well-documented—the band covers “After Midnight”, “Ride Me High”, and “Woman I Love” and even put “Travelin’ Light” on their debut album, Space Wrangler—the Athens, GA blues bulldogs have never before tackled “Crazy Mama”. A well-versed student of Cale’s music, Snider guides Hermann into the toe-tapping introduction with ease.

Given Snider’s typical solo nature—both during the Church of Hope and Wonder livestreams and beyond—Hermann’s graceful piano compositions provide a welcome addition. Snider even cedes the floor to the pianist during the middle of the tune for a quick solo. The show, however, belongs to Snider as he takes the duo home with Cale’s everlasting lyrics and brings the stream to a close.

Snider also shared footage of the two taking on his original tune, “Don’t Tempt Me” written with Loretta Lynn, from the same session to his Facebook page.
