Joe Russo’s Almost Dead guitarist Tom Hamilton took his solo band out for a spin this month, staging a dual-weekend run that wrapped on Sunday at The Homestead in Morristown, NJ.
After touring the Mid-Atlantic opening for Railroad Earth in March, Hamilton reunited with his bandmates Ryan Jewell (drums), Tom McKee (keyboard), and Taylor Shell (bass) last weekend for shows at Pittsburgh Winery, Woodlands Tavern in Columbus, OH, and the newly opened Garcia’s Chicago. The band then returned to the Northeast for a gig at Portland House of Music and two nights at Ari Fink‘s new spot, Goodhouse in Mt. Kisco, NY, before capping off the run in the Garden State.
Drawing from his various projects, Hamilton and his band played two sets each night with songs from his solo repertoire, American Babies, and covers from a wide array of artists ranging from Bob Dylan (“Tangled Up In Blue”) and Eric Clapton (“Lay Down Sally”) to The Cure (“Fascination Street”) and Screaming Trees (“Nearly Lost You”). In addition to playing guitar and singing lead vocals, Hamilton showcased his piano chops, including on a cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s “Thunder Road” performed in The Boss’ homeland.

Hamilton will return to New Jersey on Friday as part of a weekend run with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead featuring shows in Virginia Beach, VA (5/22), Asbury Park, NJ (5/23), and New Haven, CT (5/24). Then he’ll head to Boston for a pair of Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration concerts with the Boston Pops and an all-star band comprised of Jerry Garcia Band members Melvin Seals and Jacklyn LaBranch, Dead & Company bassist Oteil Burbridge, drummer John Morgan Kimock, and vocalist Lady Chi. A similar lineup—but with Widespread Panic drummer Duane Trucks subbing in for Kimock—will bring its symphonic tribute to Jerry Garcia to Red Rocks Amphitheatre on July 6th, after which Hamilton will reconvene his solo band for a run of July tour dates supporting Penelope Road and a free concert in King of Prussia, PA.
