Tool fans registered their anger both in person and online after the band repeated four songs between nights one and two of the Tool Live in the Sand destination event after promising “2 unique [Tool] sets.” The band also cut its second scheduled 90-minute performance several minutes early.
According to online accounts, Tool’s first of two weekend performances on Friday went over well. The band played a ten-song set with tracks from all five of its albums, including classics “Stinkfist”, “Schism”, “Pneuma”, “Jambi”, and the first “Vicarious” since February 28th, 2020, per Setlist.fm.
Night two got off to a rough start as Tool opened with “Fear Inoculum”, a song the band played the previous night. Of the nine songs Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, and Danny Carey played on Saturday, four were played the previous evening: “Fear Inoculum”, “Rosetta Stoned”, “Pneuma”, and “Jambi”. In addition, “Vicarious” was also written on Saturday’s setlist but not played. Probably for the best.
For this festival at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, fans were required to purchase an entire weekend pass with lodging at one of several nearby resorts. There was no way for an attendee to purchase a ticket to only one night of Tool, something frontman Maynard James Keenan may not have been aware of when he asked the crowd on Saturday who wasn’t there the night before (“No hands went up,” a Redditor recounted). To make matters worse, Tool finished its Saturday performance 15 minutes before the advertised 10:45 p.m. Another Redditor crunched the numbers and of the 75 minutes Tool was onstage, 45 minutes of music were repeated from the night before.
While these setlists were technically unique in that they were not identical, many fans spent thousands of dollars on tickets, rooms, and flights in the hopes of seeing diverse setlists from throughout Tool’s celebrated discography—rather than just 15 unique songs across two nights. Some fans even displayed their disgust in person, booing Tool at its own festival, shouting obscenities, and giving the band the finger.

On a brighter note, Tool’s Live in the Sand also saw Primus and Mastodon debut their new lineups, while Umphrey’s McGee welcomed Tool’s Danny Carey on drums for a rendition of King Crimson’s “Red”.
