Tool is back jamming in the studio after almost nine years of hiatus. In an interview with Yahoo! Music, guitarist Adam Jones cites legal troubles and a confidential illness as the main roadblocks holding the band back the past few years. The motivation inspiring Tool to return to the studio is “a different kind of fire” than the original spark, and Jones hopes to have an album ready by the end of the year.

Ongoing trouble with Tool’s insurance company resulted in a lawsuit that dragged on and on. The case reached a turning point when the courthouse venue was changed to Randy Rhodes’ court in North Los Angeles. According to Jones, his namesake embodied “the power of metal” acting as a “guardian angel” for the group.

New Tool Album Is ‘Progressing Nicely,’ Says Maynard James Keenean

With one track finished and ten in the works, fans can look forward to some “heavy,” “complex,” and “atmospheric” elements in the 10,000 Days’ (2006) long awaited follow-up. Jones compared the band’s dynamic to painters with different styles: Maynard “coming up with melodies… instantaneously,” and himself as playing around with different palates. No matter these individual differences, Tool’s next album will be the product of deliberate effort and dedication.
