Trey Anastasio Band continued its fall tour on Friday with a show at Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, CA. The Phish guitarist kept it simple with two sets composed entirely of Phish fan favorites and selections from his ever-growing repertoire of solo tunes.
“Cayman Review” was the first set opener, a likely spot for the straightforward upbeat groover. “Olivia” followed ahead of a funky TAB rendition of Phish’s “The Moma Dance” and “Alive Again”. “Camel Walk” then kicked off a sequence of tunes including the reggae-tinged “Love Is What We Are” plus “Magilla” and “Ocelot” from the Phish songbook. A few more solo tunes rounded out the first frame, including “Valentine”, “hey stranger” off the guitarist’s most recent release, 2022’s mercy, and “Dark and Down”. The band capped off the set with Phish’s “Blaze On”.
After a brief set break, Trey and company kicked off set two with the Afro-Cuban-inspired “Mozambique” and kept things light with the optimistic “Everything’s Right”. They then picked things up with “Back on the Train” and a sequence of four Trey tunes, “Simple Twist Up Dave”, “Spin”, “…And Flew Away”, and “Night Speaks to a Woman”, before closing then set with “A Life Beyond the Dream” and a twofer of fan favorites, “Twist” and “First Tube”. For the encore, TAB opted for “Rise/Come Together” as well as one of Phish’s darker tunes, “Carini”.
