Trey Anastasio Band spent an industrious weekend in the Midwest, making pit stops in America’s automotive capital, Detroit, before hauling off to Akron, OH, birthplace of tire manufacturers Goodyear and Firestone.

This ongoing fall TAB tour marks the first outing from the Phish guitarist’s eponymous solo project since saxophonist James Casey passed away two years ago. Filling Casey’s sizable shoes is saxophonist/vocalist Kenneth Whalum, who played with TAB during its last few appearances stretching back to last summer at Asbury Park, NJ’s Sea.Hear.Now. Ahead of the tour, Whalum appeared on national television backing up pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter on Saturday Night Live.

Alongside Whalum, Anastasio is playing with his longtime band of Russ Lawton (drums), Ray Paczkowski (keys), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Natalie Cressman (trombone, vocals), Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet, vocals), and Dezron Douglas (bass), who replaced the late Tony Markellis following his passing in 2021. In addition to the new saxophonist, Anastasio brought several new compositions with him on this tour, including the reflectively melancholy “Real You” and blissful “Simeon”, which both appeared on Saturday at The Fillmore Detroit.

Other Saturday highlights included a pair of lengthy (by TAB standards, at least) jams that anchored each set, with a 14-minute “Moma Dance” in the first and a 13-minute “Everything’s Right” in the second. Trey also dusted off the first “Quantegy”—taken from his 1998 solo debut, One Man’s Trash—since May 23rd, 2024, in Brooklyn, per Phish.net.

Circumventing the greatest lake, Lake Erie, Trey Anastasio Band rode along the Rust Belt to the Akron Civic Theatre to burn off the rest of the gas in the tank. Putting the pedal to the metal from the first notes, TAB kicked off the Sunday show with “First Tube”, beginning a run through “Evolve” and a “Wolfman’s Brother” that was a centerpiece of the set. In much the same way, a beautifully TAB-ified “Sand” came in the three-spot of set two and set the tone for the final frame of the weekend. “Night Speaks to a Woman” got a similarly funky deep-dive, with Phish classic “Twist” benefiting from the extra instrumentation, and new favorite “What’s Going Through Your Mind” taking the whole thing home.
