And the Tony goes to….not Trey Anastasio. Unfortunately, our favorite jam icon lost out at last night’s Tony Awards for Best Original Score for the now defunct Hands on a Hardbody to, yes, you guessed it, Cyndi Lauper. The 80′s pop star took the Tony home for her Kinky Boots score, which she co-wrote with Harvey Feinstein. Lauper, known for her hits “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”, “Time After Time”, and “True Colors” beat out Big Red, who was still extremely happy to even have been in the running.
Anastasio was able to win over two special fans just by being nominated, however….his daughters Eliza and Isabella. Even though Phish has one of the most loyal fan bases around, up until this point he was unable to win his them over with his rock exploits. “They were completely unimpressed with the rock thing. Not impressed at all. This was huge for them,” Anastasio said on the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall, alongside his wife Susan.
While Hands on a Hardbody may have closed its doors on Broadway, he did let on that the show “might run regionally in certain places” and to expect a few of the songs to be played over the summer at Phish shows, as he went on to say, “There’s a lot of great songs. I’m not sure what will make that leap at this time.”
This time, Trey just wasn’t “Good Enough” it seems; but in our books, he is still the man. So in honor of his loss to Cyndi Lauper, we are giving you the video to her hit single from The Goonies soundtrack, which features all your favorite WWF wrestlers from the 80′s. Maybe next time, Trey….maybe next time.
