Trey Anastasio delivered a reflective evening of storytelling and songs to a widely attentive, sold-out crowd at the Brown County Music Center. Located in the quaint town of Nashville, Indiana, this quintessential gem was the perfect venue for an intimate acoustic performance.
Kicking off the night with a favorite Phish tune, “Free”, Anastasio fully captured the audience’s attention for this mostly seated show. The set drew almost exclusively from the Phish songbook, with classics like “AC/DC Bag”, “Bathtub Gin”, “Waste”, and “Limb by Limb”.
The only exceptions were “Ghosts of the Forest”, the title track to Anastasio’s pre-pandemic side project’s self-titled debut, which was the first of five songs to feature special guest Jeff Tanski on piano, and “Drift While Your Sleeping”, another song from that album and the last of the five, which finished the set. Between the two, the duo also played “Guelah Papyrus”, “Reba”, and “Shade”.

Sprinkled throughout the night were impressive solo looping jams, relatable stories about dogs, references to historic Deer Creek shows—which unsurprisingly excited the Indiana crowd—and an unforgettable humorous story from Trey’s bachelor days about walking in on Phish drummer Jon Fishman giving himself a wheatgrass enema.

For the encore, “A Little More Time”, from Anastasio’s 2022 album Mercy, marked one last departure from the Phish cannon before Tanski returned and the duo closed out the night with “Fluffhead”, launching the audience members to their feet with boisterous lyrical participation right on queue.
An overall memorable evening with the perfect blend of acoustic restraint and high-energy jams, attendees were all smiles and grateful for the experience.
