Trey Anastasio, the Phish guitarist and card-carrying New Yorker, stopped by Brooklyn Bowl on Thursday night for a guest appearance with Guerilla Toss, the NYC-based outfit whose experimental inclinations have inspired countless would-be genre designations—though they’ll tell you they’re simply “the rock band Guerilla Toss.” The bill also featured GODCASTER, Lottie Malkmus, and Karina Rykman (DJ sets).
As a psychedelic liquid light show played behind them, Guerilla Toss singer/violinist Kassie Carlson, drummer Peter Negroponte, guitarist Arian Shafiee, keyboardist Jake Lichter, and bassist Zach Lewellyn worked through material from the band’s latest release, the Steve Malkmus-produced You’re Weird Now, which they recorded at Anastasio’s Vermont studio, The Barn.
Toward the end of the set, Anastasio emerged from the wing with his Languedoc guitar in hand, got situated, and followed Guerilla Toss into a reverberating wash of ambient distortion, dissonance, and electronica that recalled the expansive audiovisual M.O. of Phish’s Mondegreen “secret set” last summer. That jam soon coalesced into The Velvet Underground & Nico‘s “All Tomorrow’s Parties”, Carlson lending both Nico’s vocals and John Cale‘s strings to the locally sourced cover. “Not bad, not bad…”
From there, Guerilla Toss and Trey Anastasio dove into You’re Weird Now track “Red Flag to Angry Bull”, which features contributions from both Anastasio and Malkmus (Pavement) on the record.
