Trey Anastasio on Wednesday brought his ongoing solo acoustic tour to Kodak Hall at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. He opened the performance with “Just a Touch”, a song he debuted to a livestream-only audience with help from James CaseyNatalie Cressman, and Jennifer Hartswick during his pandemic-era Beacon Jams streaming concert series.

“I’m dedicating that song to my friend, James Casey,” Anastasio said of the late Trey Anastasio Band saxophonist who passed away in 2023 following a battle with colon cancer. “I’ve only sung that song one time in my life, and it was the first song of the last week of The Beacon Jams, we sang it together—me and Jennifer and Natalie… and James. I’ve never sung that song since that moment. I wanna thank you all for sharing that with me.” Much like the charmingly dissociative lyrics to “Just a Touch”, however, Trey was all smiles as he remembered his friend and the memories they shared.

As with the rest of the shows on Anastasio’s ongoing tour, the Rochester performance saw him welcome The Beacon Jams collaborator Jeff Tanski on keys late in the show for duo takes on “It’s Ice”, “Bug”, “Frost”, “Flying Blind” (in its first acoustic performance), “What’s The Use?”, and “Drift While You’re Sleeping” as well as during the encore for “You Enjoy Myself” and “Wilson”.
