Turkuaz has released a video cover of The Beatles‘ 1969 hit, “Here Comes The Sun”, which they initially recorded for Season Two of 11E1even Group‘s virtual festival series, Live From Out There.
On June 8th, 2020, Turkuaz premiered an hour-long Beatles cover set for Live From Out There. For those not able to watch live, Turkuaz has since started to rollout individual videos of the set, which started with their cover of “Rain” last week. Much like that video, and the entirety of the set, their rendition of “Here Comes The Sun” sees members Dave Brandwein (guitar/vocals), Taylor Shell (bass), Craig Brodhead (synth), Michelangelo Carubba (drums), Joshua Schwartz (sax/vocals), Chris Brouwers (trumpet/keys), Greg Sanderson (sax), and Sammi Garett (vocals) following the typical quarantine music video formula of recording each part from a separate location.
Turkuaz kept the song’s structure intact while infusing their power-funk sound to make it their own. Schwartz, Brouwers, and Sanderson added some flare with their horns while Garett harmonized well with Brandwein’s lead vocals. Shell complimented Carubba’s drumming with an upbeat pace from the comfort of his couch and Brodhead took center stage with some work on the synth towards the end of the song.
“The important thing to realize is that out of ‘a long cold lonely winter,’ the ice does slowly melt as the sun sets in. This is true with each new day, each new year and each new struggle,” said Brandwein about the song’s significance in a press release. “This virus, the civil unrest due to the murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and countless others, and the existential threat to our democracy seems so incredibly daunting and hard to think about.”
Co-founder Shell added, “It’s music we have heard all our lives, that somehow seems to always be growing and changing at the same time, really the mark of any good art.”

On Sunday, June 28th, Turkuaz, along with many other musicians, participated in Justice Comes Alive, the day-long music marathon benefitting the PLUS1 For Black Lives Fund which raised over $55k for organizations like Equal Justice Initiative, Impact Justice, and The Bail Project, as well as Black and Indigenous-led grassroots organizations combating racism.
Brandwein wrote a new song for the occasion based on the social issues present in society today, titled “The Sideline”. Justice Comes Alive and Live For Live Music have since began to rollout individual performances from the event. Head to the JCA Facebook page to watch the performances as they become available.
