Tyler Childers is on the wind-down of his On The Road tour which started back in April, with the singer-songwriter passing through New York City for two nights at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens this week. Armed with his new album, Snipe Hunter, and opener Medium Build, Tyler Childers and his Food Stamps backing band brought the “Honky Tonk Flame” from the Kentucky holler to the Big Apple.
Childers wasted no time digging into his latest album, starting the show with album-opener “Eatin’ Big Time”. His first full-length album since the 28-minute Rustin’ In The Rain in 2023, Snipe Hunter exponentially expanded the “Lady May” songwriter’s creative horizons. Anyone who has seen Childers perform with his longtime backing band, the Food Stamps, can attest to their engrossing psychedelic quality, and Tyler finally took that into the studio, incorporating instrumental experimentation and balancing it with an interest in Eastern spirituality. This follows his heavy gospel and Western Christian influences on his ambitious three-disc 2022 comeback album, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?
Of course, the alt-country icon brought along plenty of classics, like “Shake the Frost” and “Whitehouse Road”, plus “Lady May”, “Nose on the Grindstone”, and “Follow You to Virgie”, which he performed acoustically on a smaller side-stage. Childers also played “Jersey Giant”, a longtime cult favorite among fans despite the fact no official recording exists. To add to the allure, Tyler avoided playing it live for many years, even after Elle King, Evan Honer, and Sam Barber all separately found recent streaming success by covering it.
Childers included official versions of several long-sought-after but never professionally recorded songs on Sniper Hunter and in this week’s shows, including “Oneida” and “Nose on the Grindstone”. Last summer, he also gave the studio treatment to “Song While You’re Away“, which gained popularity from Childers’ 2016 Red Barn Radio appearance.

Childers’ tour continues this weekend with a stop in Cincinnati, OH on Friday and a headlining set at Mempho Music Festival in Memphis on Sunday. After that comes a show outside Cleveland next week ahead of a two-night, tour-closing run at Nashville’s Geodis Park. Find tickets and a full list of tour dates here.
