On Sunday night, Umphrey’s McGee continued their 2019 summer tour with a performance at Salt Lake City, UT’s Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre. Baltimore-based four-piece funk outfit Pigeons Playing Ping Pong handled the evening’s opening duties.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong opened up their single set with “Walk Outside” and “Time To Ride” before inviting up Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger to lend a helping hand on “Poseidon”. Cinninger and Pigeons guitarist Jeremy Schon traded off roaring solos backed by Ben Carrey and Alex Petropulos‘ hard-hitting rhythm section. Moving back into their four-piece configuration, PPPP worked their way through “Avalanche” and The Lion King‘s “I Can’t Wait To Be King”, which was followed up by a set-closing take on fan-favorite “Julia”.

Umphrey’s McGee kicked off their first set with a pairing of “Conduit” into “Get In The Van”, with the latter played for only the fourth time over the past two years. UM continued with “Uncle Wally” before diving into a smooth segue of “Tribute To The Spinal Shaft” into “In The Kitchen”. The sextet closed out their first frame with a pairing of “Speak Up” into “In The Black”.

Following a brief setbreak, Umphrey’s McGee returned to open up their second set with fan-favorite “Nothing Too Fancy”, which was left unfinished and flowed into “The Silent Type”. For the first time since January 26th, 2018, Umphrey’s dusted off “Frankie Zombie”, a mashup that contains segments of White Zombie’s “Thunder Kiss ’65”, Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Relax”, Pink Floyd‘s “Have A Cigar”. Moving out of the mashup, UM worked through a pairing of “Glory” into “2×2” before hopping back into the ending of “Nothing Too Fancy”. The six-piece closed out the second frame with “The Floor” and returned to offer up a lone encore of “The Floor”.
