Umphrey’s McGee is spending its 4th of July weekend on a four-night run through the Northeast, which on Friday saw the band dust off Pink Floyd classic “Young Lust” in Hampton Beach, NH. Until last night at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, the prog-jam sextet had not performed The Wall staple since August 18th, 2023 (81 shows ago), when Widespread Panic’s Duane Trucks was subbing for an injured Kris Myers. The band hadn’t performed the song with Myers since January 25th, 2019 in Milwaukee.

“Young Lust” was merely the exclamation point on an explosive show that began with a 15-minute opening “It Doesn’t Matter”. Umphrey’s loaded up the first set with old favorites including “The Floor” and “White Man’s Moccasins” while It’s Not Us addition “Remind Me” was given the space to shine with a 16-minute reading and “The Bottom Half” closed the frame. Big jams were the name of the game for set two, with the nearly non-stop performance all sandwiched between two halves of “Wizard Burial Ground”. Aside from the succinct “Suxity”, Umphrey’s McGee put up double-digit numbers on every song with lengthy journeys through “Resolution”, “Red Tape”, and a “Nothing Too Fancy” that still wasn’t quite finished even after the second half of “Wizard Burial Ground” closed the set.

When Umphrey’s returned for the encore, guitarist Brendan Bayliss took vocals on Pink Floyd’s “Young Lust”. While the band kept its cover mostly to the book, the song definitely took on some Umphrey’s flavor in the ensuing jam which quickly gathered steam. By the end, guitarist Jake Cinninger‘s rapid-fire hammer-ons and pull-offs launched the band headfirst into a reprise of “Nothing Too Fancy” to close the show.
